3 Nutrients To Help Heal Leaky Gut

Updated: Feb 11

I am sure you have heard the term "leaky gut" before, but what exactly does it mean?

Leaky gut syndrome occurs when bacteria and other toxins enter the body through gaps in the intestinal lining. These gaps can be caused by numerous things including but not limited to:

* A poor diet with low fiber consumption and high consumption of sugar, saturated fat and processed foods.

* Chronic Stress

* Overconsumption of NSAIDS (like ibuprofen) and other OTC medications

* Antibiotics that can lead to a disruption in the balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut

People with leaky gut can experience an array of symptoms which can include:

* Chronic gas, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea

* Foggy mind and thoughts

* Fatigue and weight gain

* Allergies and skin conditions

* Hormonal Imbalances

If you are experiencing some of these symptoms and think they can be attributed to leaky gut syndrome, then get checked out by your doctor who can perform the right tests for a proper diagnosis. Fortunately, with the right course of action you can totally transform your gut health. This can include a change in diet (especially away from the heavily processed and sugar filled "American Diet"), a reduction in stress (kick those who aren't watering your garden to the curb, girl!), and some beneficial supplementation in which I highlight below.

1. Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body and is present in all connective tissue including our digestive tract. As we get older, our collagen production is greatly reduced thus making supplementation key for maintaining our health. Collagen helps to balance stomach acid, hydrate the digestive track, and helps strengthen the track and repair it. I have been using Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides for years and it is my favorite! It is an unflavored powder and can be mixed in anything from water, to coffee to smoothies.

2. Beef Gelatin

Gelatin is protein that comes from the boiling of animal parts including joints, ligaments, skin and tissue. This gel like substance is digested at a slower rate than collagen and coats the intestines, which helps seal gaps and decreases the permeability of the intestinal tract. Amazing! Vital proteins is killing the game and is also the winner of my favorite beef gelatin product which comes in powder form as well. I add this to my coffee every morning!

3. L-Glutamine

Glutamine has been shown in studies to protect against mucosal breakdown in the gut, which could prove to be quite beneficial to those cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy which often causes ulcers to form on the mucosal lining. It has also been shown to enhance the body's immune response and fight against bad bacteria and gut flora. Did I forget to mention that it has even been proven to reduce sugar cravings!? Winner, winner!!! This is a staple in my smoothies along with the collagen peptides!

I hope this information helps you or someone you know who might be suffering from bad gut health and as always, please consult with your physician before starting any new health regimen. I have linked the products I personally use below for you. Happy healing ya'll!
